Smith Machine Full Squat

The Smith machine full squat is a compound lower-body exercise that targets the quadriceps and glutes through a deep, guided range of motion. The fixed vertical track reduces balancing demands, making it a reliable primary or secondary strength movement on leg day.

How to do it

  1. Stand in the Smith machine with the bar resting on your shoulders, just below the neck.
  2. Place your feet shoulder-width apart, with toes pointing slightly outward.
  3. Unrack the bar by rotating it and lifting it off the safety catches.
  4. Inhale and brace your core. As you exhale, lower your body by bending your knees and pushing your hips back as if you're sitting in a chair.
  5. Keep your back straight and chest up throughout the movement.
  6. Lower yourself until your thighs are parallel to the floor or go deeper if your flexibility allows.
  7. Ensure your knees do not extend beyond your toes and keep your weight centered over your feet.
  8. Drive through your heels to return to the starting position, extending your legs and hips.

Questions

Is the Smith machine squat as effective for muscle growth as a barbell squat?

It produces comparable quadriceps and glute hypertrophy while allowing you to train close to failure with less demand on stabilizing muscles.

What should you do if you feel knee pain during the movement?

Reduce your depth to parallel or move your feet slightly forward; if the discomfort persists, stop the exercise and consult a medical professional.
