Resistance Band Side Walk Squat
The resistance band side walk squat is a functional exercise designed to isolate the gluteus medius, gluteus minimus, and outer thighs. It is suitable for all fitness levels and works exceptionally well as a glute activation drill before heavy compounds or as a burnout movement at the end of a leg session.

How to do it
- Place the loop resistance band just above your knees (or around your ankles for more resistance).
- Stand with your feet hip-width apart and lower into a half squat, chest up and back straight.
- Keep tension on the band by pressing your knees outward.
- As you exhale, step sideways with one foot, keeping the squat depth; inhale and follow with the other foot back to hip-width.
- Continue stepping in the same direction for the set distance, then walk back the other way without letting your knees cave in.
Common mistakes
- Allowing the knees to cave inward shifts load away from the glutes and exposes the knee joints to undue stress.
- Standing up out of the half-squat between strides removes continuous mechanical tension from the lower body.
- Bringing the feet completely together slackens the loop band and eliminates constant resistance.
- Swaying the torso from side to side relies on body momentum rather than deliberate glute strength.
Tips
- Keep your feet at least hip-width apart at all points to preserve constant tension against the band.
- Shift the band down to the ankles or around the mid-foot to increase the lever arm and make the exercise significantly harder.
- Ensure your knees track in line with your toes on every lateral step to protect the joints.
Sets and reps
Perform 3–4 sets of 12–20 steps in each direction, resting 45 to 60 seconds between sets to build glute endurance and stability.

Questions
Can this exercise replace standard squats for building lower-body strength?
No, it targets stabilizing glute muscles and hip abductors rather than delivering the high mechanical tension needed for primary quad and glute hypertrophy. Use it alongside compound squats rather than as a replacement.
What should be done if lower back pain occurs during this exercise?
Check that the torso is not leaning excessively forward and that the core stays braced throughout the set. If pain persists, stop the exercise immediately and consult a healthcare professional.
