Resistance Band Overhead Shoulder Press (Version 2)
The resistance band overhead shoulder press is a compound push movement designed to strengthen the deltoids and triceps using accommodating resistance. It is well suited for home and travel strength routines, functioning effectively as either a primary vertical press or a muscle-building finisher.

How to do it
- Stand with both feet on the middle of the loop resistance band, feet shoulder-width apart.
- Grip the top of the band with both hands and bring your hands to shoulder height, palms facing forward.
- Keep your back straight, core braced, and knees slightly bent. Inhale.
- As you exhale, press the band straight up overhead until your arms are fully extended.
- Inhale and slowly lower your hands back to shoulder height, resisting the band.
Common mistakes
- Arching the lower back during the press places excessive stress on the lumbar spine instead of loading the shoulders.
- Flaring the elbows straight out to the sides places unnecessary friction on the shoulder joints and compromises pushing power.
- Allowing the band to snap the arms down quickly eliminates valuable time under tension in the eccentric phase.
- Failing to press to full arm extension due to using an overly heavy band restricts the intended range of motion.
Tips
- Keep your abdominal muscles and glutes braced firmly throughout each repetition to maintain a stable, neutral spine.
- Adjust the band tension easily by widening your stance to make it harder or stepping on it with only one foot to make it lighter.
- Pause for a brief second at the top of the movement to maximize peak contraction in the deltoids.
Sets and reps
For shoulder hypertrophy, complete 3 to 4 sets of 10 to 15 controlled repetitions with 60 to 90 seconds of rest. For muscular endurance, perform 15 to 20 reps per set with shorter rest intervals of 45 to 60 seconds.
