Band Single Arm Shoulder Press
The band single arm shoulder press is a unilateral strength exercise that targets the deltoids, triceps, and core stabilizers. It works well in home or gym routines to address muscular imbalances and build overhead pressing power without heavy spinal loading.

How to do it
- Stand on the middle of the band with your right foot and bring the handle up to your right shoulder, palm facing forward, feet hip-width apart.
- Keep your back straight, core braced, and avoid leaning to the side.
- Inhale, then as you exhale, press the handle straight up overhead until your arm is fully extended.
- Pause briefly at the top without shrugging your shoulder.
- Inhale and slowly lower the handle back to your shoulder.
- Complete all reps, then switch sides.
Common mistakes
- Leaning your torso away from the working side reduces shoulder tension and places uneven stress on the lower back.
- Shrugging your shoulder toward your ear at lockout overactivates the upper traps and risks shoulder impingement.
- Letting the band snap your hand down quickly robs you of the beneficial eccentric phase of the movement.
- Arching the lower back to push the handle up turns the exercise into an incline press and strains the lumbar spine.
Tips
- Adjust the resistance by shifting where your foot steps on the band to change the baseline tension.
- Keep your glutes and core fully braced throughout the set to maintain a stable, upright posture.
- Ensure your forearm remains strictly vertical under your wrist to maintain an optimal pressing path.
Sets and reps
Perform 3 to 4 sets of 10 to 15 controlled reps per arm to build shoulder size and endurance. Rest 30 to 45 seconds between arms or about 60 to 90 seconds after completing both sides.

Questions
How does using a band compare to pressing a dumbbell?
A band creates accommodating resistance that increases toward full extension, emphasizing peak contraction while minimizing joint strain at the bottom. It also forces your core stabilizers to work harder to prevent lateral sway.
What should I do if I feel pain in the shoulder joint while pressing?
Stop the exercise immediately to prevent injury, check if your elbow is tucked slightly forward rather than flared wide, and consult a qualified specialist if discomfort persists.
