Band Seated Neutral Grip Shoulders Press

The band seated neutral grip shoulder press is an overhead movement designed to strengthen the anterior deltoids, lateral deltoids, and triceps. Performing the press seated with palms facing inward minimizes strain on the shoulder joints and eliminates lower-body momentum, making it a great isolation builder for home or gym routines.

How to do it

  1. Sit on a bench or chair and pin the middle of the band under the seat or under your hips.
  2. Bring the handles up to shoulder height with a neutral grip, palms facing each other, elbows pointing down.
  3. Keep your back straight and your core braced.
  4. Inhale, then as you exhale, press the handles straight up overhead until your arms are fully extended.
  5. Inhale and slowly lower the handles back to shoulder height.

Tips

Sets and reps

Perform 3 to 4 sets of 10 to 15 controlled repetitions with 60 to 90 seconds of rest between sets for hypertrophy and endurance. Select a band tension that makes the final 2 to 3 reps challenging while maintaining clean form.

Questions

Why use a neutral grip instead of an overhand grip?

A neutral grip (palms facing each other) opens up the subacromial space in the shoulder, significantly reducing joint impingement while placing more load on the front delts and triceps.

What should you do if you feel sharp pain in your shoulder?

Stop the exercise immediately, avoid pushing through joint discomfort, and consult a qualified healthcare professional.
