Resistance Band Kneeling Shoulder Press
The resistance band kneeling shoulder press is an upper-body pressing exercise targeting the deltoids and triceps while demanding continuous core stability. Performing it from a tall-kneeling position eliminates leg drive, making it a valuable addition to shoulder and home strength routines.

How to do it
- Kneel on the floor and anchor the loop resistance band under both knees or shins.
- Grip the top of the band with both hands and bring your hands to shoulder height, palms facing forward.
- Keep your back straight and core braced. Inhale.
- As you exhale, press the band straight up overhead until your arms are fully extended.
- Inhale and slowly lower your hands back to shoulder height, resisting the band.
Common mistakes
- Arching the lower back to force the band up places unnecessary compressive stress on the lumbar spine.
- Flaring the elbows directly out to the sides increases impingement risk inside the shoulder joints.
- Allowing the band to snap the arms down uncontrolled removes muscle tension from the eccentric phase and compromises joint control.
Tips
- Place a folded exercise mat or foam pad under your knees to reduce floor pressure and maintain comfort.
- Actively squeeze your glutes and brace your abdomen before initiating each press to maintain a vertical torso.
- Keep your elbows angled slightly forward in the scapular plane rather than spread wide to protect your rotator cuffs.
Sets and reps
Perform 3 to 4 sets of 10 to 15 repetitions with 60 to 90 seconds of rest to build shoulder muscle and stability. If using a lighter band for endurance, aim for 15 to 20 controlled reps with 45 seconds of rest between sets.

Questions
Why do this shoulder press while kneeling instead of standing?
Kneeling removes the ability to push with the legs or swing the hips, forcing the shoulders and core to execute the movement with strict form.
Is the kneeling band press safe for the lower back?
Yes, as long as you squeeze the glutes and brace your core, it reduces lower-back strain compared to standing presses by preventing excessive lumbar extension.
