Resistance Band Glute Bridge Side Tap
The resistance band glute bridge side tap is an accessory exercise targeting the gluteus maximus and gluteus medius through simultaneous isometric hip extension and lateral abduction. It is ideal for glute activation before heavy compound lifts or as a burnout movement at the end of a lower-body session.

How to do it
- Loop the band around your thighs just above your knees and lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor, hip-width apart.
- Exhale, drive through your heels and lift your hips until your body forms a straight line from shoulders to knees.
- Holding the bridge, exhale and step one foot out to the side, tapping the floor.
- Inhale and bring the foot back to the starting position, keeping your hips high and level.
- Repeat with the other leg, alternating sides.
- Lower your hips back to the floor at the end of the set.
Common mistakes
- Dropping the hips during the tap reduces continuous tension on the supporting glute.
- Hyperextending the lower back at the top shifts the workload away from the glutes onto the lumbar spine.
- Transferring body weight onto the tapping foot compromises stability and decreases the demand on the stationary leg.
- Allowing the stationary knee to cave inward slackens the band and reduces gluteus medius activation.
Tips
- Position the mini band a few inches above your knees to keep constant tension throughout the set.
- Drive firmly through the heel of the stationary leg while bracing your core to keep your pelvis level.
- Make only a light, controlled tap with your toe without shifting your body weight to the side.
Sets and reps
Perform 3 to 4 sets of 12 to 15 taps per leg with 45 to 60 seconds of rest between sets to build glute endurance and stability.

Questions
Why do I feel strain in my lower back during this exercise?
Lower back strain usually occurs when you arch the lumbar spine instead of extending through the hips; if pain persists, stop the exercise and consult a specialist.
Can this exercise be performed without a resistance band?
Yes, performing the movement with body weight alone is suitable for beginners, although adding a band significantly increases demand on the gluteus medius.
