Resistance Band Standing Balance Glute Kickback

The resistance band standing balance glute kickback is an isolation movement designed to target the gluteus maximus while challenging single-leg stability. It works well as a glute activation drill during a warm-up or as a high-rep finisher at the end of a lower-body workout.

How to do it

  1. Loop the band around both ankles and stand tall with your feet hip-width apart, hands on your hips or out for balance.
  2. Shift your weight onto one leg and lift the other foot slightly off the floor.
  3. Keep your torso upright and your core braced.
  4. Inhale. As you exhale, drive the lifted leg straight back against the band, squeezing your glute and keeping your lower back neutral.
  5. Inhale and slowly bring the leg back without letting the foot touch the floor, staying balanced on the supporting leg.
  6. Complete all reps, then switch legs.

Questions

Why does the standing leg burn more than the moving leg?

The gluteus medius of the standing leg works isometrically under constant tension to keep your pelvis level and maintain balance against the band.

Is this exercise safe if lower back discomfort occurs?

Reduce the range of motion to ensure the movement comes only from the hip; if back pain persists, stop the exercise and consult a specialist.
