Lever Squat Machine
The lever squat machine is a compound strength exercise that targets the quadriceps and glutes along a guided movement path. It is suitable for lifters of all levels and works well as a primary leg movement or a secondary overload exercise in lower-body workouts.

How to do it
- Position yourself under the squat machine, placing your shoulders under the pads.
- Adjust the machine to fit your height and stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, toes pointing slightly outward.
- Grasp the handles or the sides of the machine for balance.
- Inhale and brace your core. As you exhale, bend your knees and lower your body into a squat, keeping your back straight and chest up.
- Lower yourself until your thighs are parallel to the floor or go deeper if your flexibility allows.
- Focus on keeping your knees in line with your toes and your weight on your heels.
- Push through your heels to return to the starting position, extending your legs.
Common mistakes
- Lifting the heels off the platform shifts excessive stress onto the knees and reduces stability.
- Allowing the knees to cave inward during the ascent compromises the knee ligaments.
- Rounding the lower back at the bottom of the squat increases shearing forces on the lumbar spine.
- Aggressively locking out the knees at the top removes tension from the target muscles and stresses the joints.
Tips
- Adjust the shoulder pads so you can comfortably unrack the weight with a neutral spine.
- Keep your weight evenly distributed across your midfoot and heels throughout the entire range of motion.
- Place your feet slightly forward to emphasize the glutes, or closer under the hips to focus on the quads.
Sets and reps
For muscle growth, aim for 3 to 4 sets of 8 to 12 reps with 2 to 3 minutes of rest between sets. For muscular endurance, perform 3 sets of 15 to 20 reps with 60 to 90 seconds of rest.

Questions
Is the lever squat machine safer for the lower back than barbell squats?
The guided mechanical path and shoulder padding significantly lower stabilizer demands, which generally reduces axial stress on the lower back. If you feel sharp pain or discomfort, stop the movement and consult a healthcare professional.
What exercises can replace the lever squat machine?
Effective substitutes include the hack squat machine, the 45-degree leg press, or traditional barbell and goblet squats.
