Lever Seated Crunch Machine
The lever seated crunch machine is an isolation exercise designed to load the rectus abdominis through a guided path of motion. It suits lifters of all experience levels and is best placed near the end of a workout to apply progressive resistance to the core.
How to do it
- Sit on the seated crunch machine and adjust the seat and resistance according to your comfort level.
- Grasp the handles or the bar provided for support, depending on the machine design.
- Position your feet firmly on the footrests and keep your back against the backrest.
- Inhale and brace your core. Exhale as you perform a crunch movement, bringing your upper body towards your knees.
- Focus on contracting your abdominal muscles to perform the movement.
- Move in a controlled manner without using momentum.
- Slowly return to the starting position, allowing your abs to stretch before the next repetition.
Common mistakes
- Pulling forcefully with the arms rather than flexing the spine, which shifts tension away from the abs.
- Hinging at the hips with a flat back instead of curling the ribcage toward the pelvis.
- Using momentum and letting the weight stack crash, which reduces time under tension and strains the spine.
Tips
- Align the machine's pivot point with the natural bending axis of your torso before starting.
- Pause for one full second at peak contraction to maximize abdominal muscle recruitment.
- Control the eccentric return slowly to keep constant tension on the abdominals.
Sets and reps
Perform 3–4 sets of 12–20 reps with 60–90 seconds of rest between sets to build abdominal hypertrophy and endurance.

Questions
Is the seated crunch machine safe for the lower back?
It is generally safe when using controlled repetitions and proper seat adjustment. If you experience lower back pain, stop immediately and consult a healthcare professional.
What can replace this exercise if the machine is occupied?
Kneeling cable crunches with a rope attachment or weighted incline bench crunches provide a comparable resistance profile.
