Sled Calf Press on Leg Press Machine
The sled calf press on a leg press machine is an isolation exercise designed to target the calf muscles, primarily the gastrocnemius. It suits lifters of all experience levels and fits well toward the end of a lower-body workout to exhaust the calves without spinal compression.
How to do it
- Sit on the leg press machine and place the balls of your feet on the lower portion of the footplate.
- Keep your heels hanging off the edge of the platform.
- Release the safety handles and allow your ankles to flex, bringing your toes toward your shins.
- Press through the balls of your feet to extend your ankles and push the weight up.
- Pause at the top, then slowly return to the starting position.
Common mistakes
- Locking out your knees shifts heavy mechanical stress directly onto the joints and ligaments.
- Bouncing the sled at the bottom uses tendon recoil instead of active muscle effort and risks straining the Achilles tendon.
- Placing only the tips of your toes on the edge increases the chance of your feet slipping off the platform.
- Using a cut-short range of motion prevents the calves from experiencing a full stretch and peak contraction.
Tips
- Maintain a soft, slight bend in your knees from start to finish to protect the joint structure.
- Hold the peak contraction for a full second at the top to eliminate momentum.
- Engage or adjust the machine's safety catches to catch the sled if your feet happen to slip.
Sets and reps
Perform 3 to 4 sets of 12 to 20 reps, resting 60 to 90 seconds between sets to maximize metabolic stress and muscle growth.

Questions
Is the sled calf press safe for people with lower back issues?
Yes, because your back remains fully supported against the pad, it removes the vertical spinal compression found in standing calf raises.
Which part of the calf does this exercise emphasize?
Keeping your legs mostly straight places primary tension on the gastrocnemius while also recruiting the deeper soleus muscle.
