How to do it
- Sit on a chair with your back straight and extend one leg forward.
- Loop the resistance band around the ball of the extended foot and hold both sides of the band firmly with your hands.
- Pull the band toward you slightly so it is taut, toes pointing up. Inhale.
- As you exhale, press the ball of your foot forward and point your toes away from you against the band, as in a calf raise.
- Inhale and slowly let your foot flex back to the starting position.
- Complete your reps, then switch legs.
Common mistakes
- Placing the band across the toes instead of the ball of the foot, which risks the band slipping off mid-rep.
- Allowing the foot to snap back quickly without resisting the band, which reduces time under tension during the eccentric phase.
- Bending the knee during the press, which shifts the mechanical load away from the calf and onto the thigh.
Tips
- Hold the peak contraction for one to two seconds when the toes are fully pointed away from you.
- Wrap the band securely around your hands to prevent it from slipping and to maintain consistent tension.
- Keep your torso upright without leaning back or slouching against the chair.
Sets and reps
Perform 3 to 4 sets of 15 to 25 repetitions per leg, resting 45 to 60 seconds between sets to build calf endurance and size.

Questions
Can this exercise replace standing calf raises?
It serves as an effective low-impact alternative that removes heavy spinal compression while still providing direct resistance to the calf muscles.
What should you do if your foot arch or calf cramps during the movement?
Stop the set immediately and gently flex the foot upward to stretch the tissue. If sharp pain or recurring cramps persist, consult a medical specialist.
