Resistance Band Glute Bridge
The resistance band glute bridge is an isolation movement designed to strengthen the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and hamstrings. It works well for lifters of any experience level as a warm-up activation drill before heavy compounds or as a high-rep hypertrophy finisher.

How to do it
- Loop the band around both thighs, just above your knees.
- Lie on your back with your knees bent, feet flat on the floor hip-width apart, and arms at your sides.
- Press your knees slightly outward against the band and brace your core.
- Inhale, then as you exhale, drive through your heels and lift your hips up until your body forms a straight line from shoulders to knees.
- Squeeze your glutes hard at the top and keep tension against the band.
- Inhale and slowly lower your hips back to the floor.
Common mistakes
- Hyperextending the lower back at the top shifts mechanical tension away from the glutes and strains the lumbar spine.
- Allowing the knees to cave inward reduces band tension and disables the gluteus medius.
- Pushing through the toes instead of the heels shifts the emphasis toward the quads and stresses the knee joints.
- Using momentum to bounce up and down bypasses the peak contraction against the band's maximum resistance.
Tips
- Keep continuous outward pressure against the band throughout the entire range of motion, even at the bottom.
- Pause for one to two seconds at lockout to maximize peak glute contraction.
- Keep your chin tucked slightly toward your chest to help maintain a neutral spine and prevent rib flare.
Sets and reps
For hypertrophy and muscular endurance, perform 3 to 4 sets of 15 to 25 controlled repetitions with 45 to 60 seconds of rest between sets.

Questions
Where should the resistance band be placed?
Position the mini-band roughly one to two inches above your knees around the lower thighs so it stays secure without placing direct torque on the knee joint.
Is the banded glute bridge safe if you have lower back issues?
It is generally spine-friendly because the back stays supported on the floor, but if you feel any sharp lower-back pinching or pain, stop immediately and consult a healthcare professional.
