Lever Preacher Curl
The lever preacher curl is an isolation machine exercise designed to target the biceps brachii while keeping the upper arms strictly stabilized. It eliminates body momentum and works well as an accessory or finishing movement in an arm or pull-day routine for lifters of any experience level.

How to do it
- Sit at the preacher curl machine with your upper arms resting on the pad.
- Adjust the pad and seat so that your arms are comfortably positioned and your elbows are aligned with the pivot point of the machine.
- Grasp the handles with an underhand grip.
- Inhale and brace your core. Exhale as you curl the handles towards your shoulders, focusing on contracting your biceps.
- Keep your upper arms firmly against the pad throughout the exercise.
- Squeeze your biceps at the top of the movement.
- Slowly lower the handles back to the starting position, controlling the movement.
Common mistakes
- Lifting your elbows off the support pad during the curl shifts tension from the biceps onto the anterior deltoids.
- Hyperextending or forcefully locking out your elbows at the bottom places dangerous stress on the bicep tendons.
- Failing to align your elbow joints with the machine's axis of rotation creates unnatural joint shearing forces.
- Leaning back to yank the handles upward uses momentum instead of muscular effort, blunting the training stimulus.
Tips
- Adjust the seat so the top of the pad fits snugly into your armpits without forcing your shoulders to shrug.
- Pause for a full second at peak contraction to maximize tension in the shortened biceps.
- Lower the weight smoothly over two to three seconds to make the most of the eccentric phase.
Sets and reps
Aim for 3 to 4 sets of 8 to 15 repetitions with 60 to 90 seconds of rest between sets to target hypertrophy and muscular endurance. Heavy low-rep strength work under 6 reps is not recommended on this machine due to high tendon strain at full extension.

Your coach guides every set
Turn on the coach in Gloox: it asks how you feel, picks the weight from your history and cues technique and rest. Rate each set and the next one is tuned to you.

Questions
How does this machine differ from a free-weight barbell preacher curl?
The lever mechanism maintains constant tension throughout the entire movement, whereas free weights lose resistance near the very top.
What should you do if you experience pain in the inner elbow?
Stop the exercise immediately, ensure you are not hyperextending at the bottom, and consult a qualified medical professional if pain continues.
