Clean and Press Barbell
The barbell clean and press is an explosive compound movement that transitions a floor pull into an overhead press in one continuous sequence. It develops total-body power across the legs, glutes, back, and shoulders, making it an ideal primary lift to place at the start of a strength session.

How to do it
- Start by standing with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding a barbell just in front of your shins, hands shoulder-width apart.
- Bend at your hips and knees, keeping your back straight, and grip the barbell with an overhand grip.
- Inhale, brace your core, and lift the barbell by extending your hips and knees, keeping the bar close to your body.
- As the bar reaches your thighs, quickly lift your elbows to bring the bar to your shoulders (the clean). Keep your wrists straight and elbows pointed forward.
- Exhale, and then press the barbell overhead by extending your arms fully (the press).
- Lower the bar back to your shoulders and then to the starting position, controlling the movement throughout.
Common mistakes
- Allowing the barbell to swing outward away from the body during the pull reduces mechanical leverage and strains the lower back.
- Pulling the bar upward using the biceps rather than driving through hip extension destroys explosive power and risks elbow strain.
- Excessively arching the lumbar spine during the overhead press shifts tension away from the shoulders into the lower back.
- Rushing immediately into the press without establishing a stable front rack and solid foot stance compromises overhead balance.
Tips
- Drive aggressively through your heels and snap your hips forward to propel the bar upward before catching it.
- Rotate your elbows quickly around and under the bar during the catch so it rests safely on your shoulders rather than solely in your wrists.
- Squeeze your glutes and brace your core firmly before pressing the barbell vertically overhead.
Sets and reps
Perform 3 to 5 sets of 2 to 5 repetitions with 2 to 3 minutes of rest between sets to maximize power output and strength. Avoid high-rep sets to failure due to the high technical and neurological demands of the lift.

Questions
What is the difference between a clean and press and a clean and jerk?
The clean and press finishes with a strict overhead press using only the upper body, whereas the clean and jerk uses a secondary dip and leg drive to push the barbell overhead.
Is the barbell clean and press safe for your lower back?
It places high dynamic demand on the lumbar spine, requiring solid hip hinge mechanics and core bracing. If you experience sharp pain or discomfort, stop immediately and consult a healthcare specialist.
