Band Seated Leg Extension
The band seated leg extension is an isolation exercise designed to target and strengthen the quadriceps. It fits well into home training routines, warm-ups, or as a quad burnout movement at the end of a lower-body workout.

How to do it
- Anchor the band at a low point behind a sturdy chair and sit on the chair with your back straight.
- Slip your right foot into the handle so the band runs back under the chair, and let your knee bend to about 90 degrees.
- Hold the sides of the seat and brace your core.
- Inhale, then as you exhale, extend your knee and straighten your leg out in front of you against the band's resistance.
- Squeeze your thigh at the top for a moment.
- Inhale and slowly bend your knee back to the starting position; complete all reps, then switch legs.
Common mistakes
- Letting the band snap the leg back quickly eliminates eccentric tension and reduces muscular engagement.
- Lifting your thigh or hips off the chair relies on momentum instead of pure quadriceps contraction.
- Forcefully locking out the knee at peak extension places unnecessary stress on the joint.
Tips
- Hold and consciously squeeze your quadriceps for a full second at the top of each rep.
- Set the anchor distance so the band maintains slight tension even in the starting bent-knee position.
- Grip the sides of the seat firmly to stabilize your pelvis and upper body throughout the set.
Sets and reps
Perform 3 to 4 sets of 12 to 20 repetitions per leg, resting 45 to 60 seconds between sets to build local muscular endurance and hypertrophy.

Questions
Is this exercise safe if I have knee issues?
The band provides smooth, joint-friendly resistance, but if you feel any sharp knee pain, stop immediately and consult a healthcare specialist.
How does a resistance band compare to a gym leg extension machine?
The band creates progressive resistance that peaks at full leg extension, whereas a gym machine provides consistent load across the entire range of motion.
