Lever Pec Deck Fly
The lever pec deck fly is an isolation machine exercise that targets the pectoralis major with consistent mechanical tension. It works best in the middle or at the end of a chest session to thoroughly fatigue the pecs without taxing shoulder stabilizing muscles.
How to do it
- Sit in a pec deck machine with your back against the pad.
- Grip the handles with your elbows bent at 90 degrees and upper arms parallel to the ground.
- Bring the handles together in front of your chest by contracting your pecs.
- Squeeze at the center.
- Return to the starting position with control.
Common mistakes
- Setting the seat at an improper height shifts the mechanical load onto the anterior deltoids and strains the shoulder capsule.
- Lifting your back and shoulders off the support pad reduces chest recruitment and compromises shoulder joint positioning.
- Allowing the weight stack to pull your arms back without control creates sudden, excessive tension across the shoulder tendons.
Tips
- Adjust the seat so that your elbows and upper arms align horizontally across the center of your chest.
- Focus on initiating the movement by pressing your elbows inward rather than squeezing aggressively with your hands.
- Hold the peak contraction for one second to maximize tension at the shortest muscle length.
Sets and reps
Perform 3 to 4 sets of 10 to 15 reps, focusing on an explosive contraction and a slow eccentric tempo. Rest for 60 to 90 seconds between sets.

Questions
What is the main advantage of the pec deck over dumbbell flyes?
The pec deck provides continuous resistance throughout the entire range of motion, whereas dumbbells lose resistance when your hands align over your shoulders.
Is the pec deck fly safe to perform with shoulder issues?
Limit the stretch at the start of each rep to protect the anterior capsule, and stop the exercise to consult a specialist if pain persists.
