How to do it

  1. Stand with your feet hip-width apart, holding a barbell across your upper back and shoulders.
  2. Step forward with one foot, lowering your body until both knees are bent at about 90 degrees.
  3. The front knee should be directly above the ankle and the back knee nearly touching the ground.
  4. Keep your torso upright and maintain balance throughout the movement.
  5. Push through the heel of your front foot to rise back up and step forward with the opposite foot, transitioning into a lunge on the other leg.
  6. Continue walking forward, alternating legs with each step.

Tips

Sets and reps

Perform 3 to 4 sets of 8 to 12 steps per leg for muscle hypertrophy and unilateral strength, resting 90 to 120 seconds between sets. Heavy low-rep schemes are generally avoided due to the balance requirements.

Questions

Which muscles are worked the most during walking lunges?

The quadriceps, gluteus maximus, and adductors act as the primary prime movers, while the calves and core stabilize each stride.

What should be done if lower back pain occurs during the exercise?

Stop the exercise immediately and consult a medical specialist, or switch to holding dumbbells at your sides to reduce spinal compression.
