How to do it

  1. Stand in front of a cable machine with the pulley set at a high position.
  2. Attach a rope handle to the pulley.
  3. Grab the rope with both hands, palms facing each other.
  4. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent.
  5. Lean forward slightly from your hips, keeping your back straight.
  6. Keep your elbows close to your sides, bent at about 90 degrees.
  7. Inhale and brace your core. Exhale as you extend your elbows, pushing the rope down towards your thighs.
  8. Focus on using your triceps to perform the pushdown.
  9. At the bottom of the movement, you can separate your hands to maximize the triceps contraction.
  10. Slowly return to the starting position, maintaining control and keeping the tension on your triceps.

Tips

Sets and reps

For muscle hypertrophy, perform 3 to 4 sets of 10 to 15 reps, resting 60 to 90 seconds between sets. To use it as an endurance finisher, aim for 2 to 3 sets of 15 to 20 controlled reps with lighter weight.

Questions

How does the rope attachment differ from a straight bar pushdown?

The rope allows your wrists to rotate naturally and spread apart at the bottom, which achieves a stronger peak contraction in the lateral triceps head than a fixed bar.

What can replace cable pushdowns when working out at home?

You can anchor a resistance band overhead to mimic the exact cable line of pull, or substitute with dumbbell kickbacks and overhead extensions.
