Resistance Band Monster Walk
The resistance band monster walk is an accessory drill designed to strengthen and activate the gluteus medius, gluteus minimus, and hip stabilizers. It is suitable for all fitness levels and works best as a warm-up before heavy compound lifts or as a high-rep glute finisher.

How to do it
- Place a resistance band around your legs, either above your knees or around your ankles.
- Stand with feet hip-width apart, creating tension in the band.
- Bend slightly at the knees and hips.
- Step forward and out to the side with one foot, then bring the other foot forward and out.
- Continue walking forward in this manner, maintaining tension in the band.
Common mistakes
- Allowing the knees to cave inward takes the load off the glutes and places unnecessary stress on the knee joints.
- Standing upright between steps disengages the hip musculature and shifts mechanical tension to the lower back.
- Bringing the feet too close together causes the band to go slack, eliminating constant tension on the target muscles.
- Swaying the torso side to side uses upper-body momentum instead of deliberate hip abduction to drive movement.
Tips
- Place the band above the knees for easier technique control, or shift it to the ankles or forefeet to maximize resistance.
- Maintain a continuous quarter-squat position with your knees tracking directly over your toes at all times.
- Control the trailing leg on every stride to prevent the elastic band from abruptly snapping your feet together.
Sets and reps
For activation, complete 2 to 3 sets of 12 to 15 steps per direction with 45 to 60 seconds of rest. For muscular endurance, perform 3 to 4 sets of 20 to 25 steps per side with shorter rest periods.

Questions
Where should the resistance band be placed for monster walks?
Placing the band above the knees reduces joint torque and helps master the movement, whereas positioning it around the ankles or forefeet significantly increases glute activation.
Is the monster walk safe if you have lower back issues?
The movement imposes minimal axial load on the spine as long as you maintain a neutral torso without arching. If you experience pain, stop immediately and consult a healthcare professional.
