Barbell Incline Shoulder Press
The barbell incline shoulder press is a compound overhead movement targeting the anterior deltoids, clavicular head of the pectorals, and triceps. It is best used as a primary strength builder at the start of a push or shoulder-focused training session.
How to do it
- Sit on an incline bench set at an angle of about 45 to 60 degrees, with a barbell.
- Hold the barbell at chest level with an overhand grip, hands slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
- Plant your feet firmly on the ground for stability.
- Inhale and brace your core. As you exhale, press the barbell upwards, extending your arms fully above your head.
- Keep your back pressed against the bench and avoid arching your lower back.
- Focus on using your shoulder muscles to lift the bar.
- Pause briefly at the top of the movement with your arms fully extended.
- Slowly lower the barbell back to chest level, controlling the movement.
Common mistakes
- Excessively arching the lower back to push the chest up shifts tension away from the shoulders and places unwanted stress on the lumbar spine.
- Flaring the elbows out completely to the sides increases shear forces on the shoulder joints and risks impingement.
- Setting the bench angle too low, under 45 degrees, turns the exercise into a chest press and reduces deltoid activation.
Tips
- Keep your elbows tucked at roughly a 60-degree angle relative to your torso throughout the lift to protect your rotator cuffs.
- Plant your feet firmly on the floor and brace your abdominal wall before unyoking the barbell.
- Lower the bar under control to the upper chest rather than letting it bounce off your clavicles.
Sets and reps
For hypertrophy, perform 3 to 4 sets of 6 to 10 repetitions with 2 to 3 minutes of rest between sets. If training for strength, work with 3 to 5 sets of 4 to 6 reps with 3 minutes of rest.

Questions
How does the incline shoulder press differ from an overhead press?
The back support reduces balance requirements and spinal compression, allowing you to handle heavy loads with focused tension on the front delts and upper chest.
Can dumbbells replace the barbell for this exercise?
Yes, dumbbells are an effective alternative that allow a more natural, converging wrist and elbow path if barbell pressing causes shoulder discomfort.
