Band Shrug

The band shrug is an isolation exercise designed to strengthen and build the upper trapezius muscles using resistance bands. It fits well at the end of an upper-body or back session, offering focused trap stimulation without loading the spine with heavy free weights.

How to do it

  1. Stand on the middle of the band with both feet, holding a handle in each hand at your sides with arms straight.
  2. Keep your back straight, chest up, and shoulders relaxed down.
  3. Inhale, then as you exhale, shrug your shoulders straight up toward your ears as high as possible, keeping your arms extended.
  4. Hold the top position for a second, squeezing your upper traps.
  5. Inhale and slowly lower your shoulders back to the starting position.

Questions

Can band shrugs build trap size as effectively as barbells?

While barbells allow higher absolute loads, bands offer peak tension at maximum contraction, making them effective for hypertrophy when performed with high volume and pauses.

What should you do if you feel sharp pain in your neck or shoulder?

Stop the exercise immediately, and consult a qualified healthcare professional if the pain persists.
