Cable Shrug

The cable shrug is an isolation movement designed to build the upper trapezius muscles using the continuous tension of a cable system. It fits well toward the end of a back or shoulder workout for lifters aiming to develop upper-back thickness and scapular control.

Questions

What is the advantage of using cables over dumbbells for shrugs?

Cables provide constant resistance throughout the entire range of motion and allow an angled pull that often feels more comfortable on the shoulder joints than free weights.

What should you do if you experience neck pain during this exercise?

Stop the exercise immediately to avoid straining the cervical spine muscles, and consult a qualified specialist if the pain persists.
